How to create a loyal customer base by preventing lifting

Lifting is one of the biggest frustrations for nail technicians and clients alike. When artificial nails fall off or develop bubbles, clients are likely to be dissatisfied and may even switch salons. Fortunately, with the right techniques and precautions, you can minimize lifting and build client loyalty. In this blog post, we share the best tips for preventing lifting and building a loyal clientele.

Why Clients Stay Away Due to Lifting

Clients who regularly experience lifting consider it a sign of poor quality. They pay for beautiful, long-lasting nails, and if they fall off within a short time, it feels like a waste of money. This leads to complaints, additional repairs, and sometimes even the loss of a client. By avoiding lifting, you not only improve your results but also strengthen your reputation and customer loyalty.

Our best tips against lifting

1. Perfect nail preparation

Good preparation is the foundation for long-lasting nails. Make sure the nail plate is completely clean and free of grease. This means:

  • Do not leave any cuticle residue or dead skin on the nail plate.
  • Lightly roughen the nail plate with a fine buffer file (180 grit) for better adhesion.
  • Use a dehydrator and primer that matches the product you are applying.

2. Correct product selection

Not all brands or products work well together. It's important to choose products that complement each other well. Consider:

  • The correct primer or bonder for the gel, acrylic, acrylic gel or polygel used.
  • High-quality builder gel and topcoat that ensure strong adhesion.
  • Avoiding cheap products that are often less sustainable.

3. Application technology

The way you apply the product largely determines whether lifting occurs. Note:

  • Use thin, even layers to avoid bubbles and peeling.
  • Leave approximately the thickness of a hairline (0.5mm) around the cuticles and side walls to prevent lifting from skin contact.
  • Make sure the apex (the curve) is in the right place for a strong nail structure.

4. Correct curing

A common cause of lifting is improper nail curing. You can prevent this by:

  • Use a UV/LED lamp that is powerful enough and suitable for your product.
  • Adhere to the recommended curing time. Too short a curing time can cause problems, and too long can lead to discoloration of (neon) pigments.
  • Check regularly whether your lamp still has sufficient power, as the strength decreases over time.

5. Customer education

Clients can also help prevent lifting themselves. Provide them with clear aftercare instructions, such as:

  • No hot baths or steam immediately after a treatment.
  • Use nail oil to keep nails and cuticles hydrated.
  • Wear gloves when doing housework and cleaning.

Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Some mistakes can unknowingly contribute to lifting. For example, avoid:

  • Filing too aggressively: This weakens the natural nail and can cause adhesion problems.
  • Bad product combinations: Not all brands of primers, bonders, and gels work well together.
  • Working too quickly: Take your time for proper preparation and careful application. A visit to your salon is a me-time experience for your clients. So take plenty of time for your clients and always send them off feeling cared for and satisfied.

What to do when a client experiences constant lifting?

Sometimes a client experiences repeated lifting, despite proper preparation. In that case, you can:

  • Run through a checklist to determine where the problem lies.
  • Try other products, such as an acid-free primer or a stronger builder gel.
  • Provide the customer with clear aftercare instructions and check that these are followed.

Consistency = returning customers

By consistently delivering the same high quality, you build trust with your customers. This means:

  • Maintaining a streamlined workflow in your salon.
  • Informing customers about what they can do to keep their nails beautiful for longer.
  • Attend regular training to stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and products.

Minimizing lift will keep clients satisfied and happy to return to your salon. Want to improve even further? Invest in quality products, keep learning, and give your clients the best service they deserve!
